FACEBOOK SAFETY AND SECURITY. Almost anyone these days can open a Facebook account. Facebook can be a scaring place if you are not careful. There are persons waiting to exploit others. Hackers, scammers, creeps, and all sorts abound on Facebook, a person can’t help but be very careful. The following safety and security tips would help to make one’s Facebook experience a safer one:
Don’t use your complete names
The Facebook policy forbids the use of fake names but does allow for nicknames or aliases. Using one’s full legal name could be quite unnecessary. A full legal name aids predators and identity thieves to obtain more information about you.
Don’t register until you are thirteen
Facebook forbids anyone younger than thirteen from having an account. There is really no need to have an account if you are below the stipulated age. If found that you lied about your age, your account will be terminated.
Create a Strong Password
A simple password can easily be guessed and armed with such knowledge, someone can break into your account. A person’s password should be quite difficult, and never provide anyone with it. Always make sure to log out of Facebook completely when using a public computer
Set strong privacy settings
A strong privacy setting is very important. It is advised you set your privacy settings so that not just anyone can see your profile and content. Details of the profile should only be made available to persons already accepted as friends.
Don’t post any contact information on your profile
Making phone contacts and email viewable in one’s profile is not entirely the best. Hackers and spammers can use this to unnecessarily disturb someone or even pose more dangers to one’s account. The less exposure, the better.
Avoid posting your location
With the knowledge of your location, unscrupulous elements can use that to render havoc. They could either use it to track you down, stalk, and even kidnap. Thieves and potential thieves could even use such knowledge to track a person. Never post that you are alone.
Report Abuse
If you feel threatened by anyone on Facebook or someone is harassing you by sending unsolicited and unwanted messages or posting something abusive on your wall, simply report it by clicking the ‘Report Abuse’ link on the post. You can also untag yourself if tagged to a picture or post you don’t like.
Keep an eye out for Facebook scams and Rogue applications
Facebook apps require access to parts of a person’s profile. Clearly, not all Facebook apps are good. If you give any app access and the app is malicious, you may just have opened yourself up to spam or even worse. Always check an app out before giving access. When in doubt, check the app’s name by googling it.
