Here are some common ways interviewers ask job candidates about their motivations and get advice on the best responses, also with answers to avoid.

Motivation

Motivation can be defined as a process that helps drive goal-oriented behaviors. Motivation is the reason for our actions.

Types of Motivation

Extrinsic Motivations: These are those that stem from outside of the individual and often involve rewards like trophies, money, social recognition, or praise.

Intrinsic Motivations: These are those that stem from within the individual, like doing a complicated crossword puzzle mainly for the personal gratification of solving a problem.

Answering to Interview Questions About Motivation

It advised that during job interviews, you should try as much as you can to highlight intrinsic motivations rather than extrinsic ones.

Ensure you review the job description and find out as much as you can about the position before any interview. Once you’ve done your research, tailor your responses to fit what the employer is looking for in a candidate.

Based on your background and experiences, your response may vary, but you should try and keep it positive. In your response, share your enthusiasm and what you liked best about your last or current job.

A Peek into Best Answers

The best answers to motivational questions are truth/honest, but at the same time should also connect to the job you are applying for. Your response should strongly imply that you’d be highly motivated by, and suited for, the work involved in the role at hand.

Try and back up whatever you say with examples from your studies, work experience, and volunteer activities, and your answers should link to the skills and aptitudes needed for the job you are applying for.

While preparing to answer this question, this should come to your mind;

The things you enjoyed while working at previous positions.

The kind of tasks you have the expertise for. The kind of environment (busy, deadline-driven, cooperative, competitive, loud, quiet, etc.) that brings out the best in you.

What You Should Avoid Saying

Asa candidate, there are some answers that will not reflect well.

In case you are motivated by factors that are not linked to the job description, it may be a red flag for the interviewer.

Steer clear from responses that name money (your salary, a bonus, a commission, etc.) as a motivating factor.

Even though we know that your reason for working is to get a good paycheck and financial benefits, that is not the kind of answer interviewers are looking for. Also, avoid mentioning that you are being motivated by praise and acknowledgment in your response.

Ensure you give an honest or specific answer, and avoid vague responses, because every question is an opportunity to show off your strengths and vague responses are not helpful for interviewers and will not put you in the favored list.
