Getting Your Kids Their First Credit Card-What You Should Know

Getting your kid’s first credit card is important. Therefore, helping them build credit with responsible credit use is a wise parenting move. With the right guide, you can help your child develop the skills and knowhow on how to become a credit-savvy adult.

Getting Your Kids Their First Credit Card-What You Should Know

Why Should You Get Your Minor a Credit Card?

Credit cards are a medium of paying for things. However your kids may not understand this, so you have to talk your kids through the basics.  By showing them a statement and defining all the terms in black and white for them to understand. You have to explain to them what annual percentage rate (APR), statement balance, credit limit, available credit, and minimum payment due and so much more.

You can explain the fees as it relates to the account. Furthermore you show that if the balance is not paid off in full every month, the interest will affect the balance.

Once your kids knows how a credit card works, you should explain credit scores as well.  Expain how they can impact your ability to take out a loan, get a mortgage, rent an apartment or even get utilities in your name. They should be made to know that a good credit rating is important in your life. Thus you have to impress upon your child the need of building credit and staying in good standing.

Small Beginning

Experts advise that parents take a training-wheels approach before giving their kid a credit card as well as the ability to make a major financial mistake. Parents should start by setting up a debit card. This should be a specific amount that your kid can spend over a period of time. Once your child demonstrates responsibility and good credit habits, you can move them to a credit card.

Start with a Secured Credit Card

Starting your child with a secured credit card, means you get a credit limit which corresponds to a deposit. This means that for a $500 deposit, you’ll get a $500 credit limit. As your child uses and then pays back the money, your child demonstrates fiscal responsibility and will learn that having credit does not equal spending without limits. The advantage that a secured card has over an unsecured card is that your child will be building a credit history by using the card, as compared to a debit or prepaid cards. After a period of time, the bank will likely move your child to an unsecured card.

Limit the Number of Cards

Applying for and getting more than one card may create a hard-to-track pile of payments. You may also be clueless of the total sum due at any given moment, or simply too much temptation. When your child uses multiple cards irresponsibly, it will hurt your child’s score, the same as applying for many credit cards in a short period of time. Thus it’s best to start your child with one card and keep things simple. Allow more responsibility as he/she proves him/herself.

Keep the Limit Low

If you keep a reasonably low limit on a credit card, you’ll avoid creating too much spending freedom for your child, which prevents him from making a major financial mistake. You must also ensure that you explain to your child how the credit utilization rate which is the percentage of available credit that’s being tapped works and how it will affect their credit score. A low utilization rate – 30% or less, is a major factor in having a healthy credit score.

Benefits of Getting a Credit Card for a Child Under 18

Here are some benefits that come with giving your under 18 children a credit card:

  • It helps your child establish a credit history. Since any credit account that lenders report to the three credit bureaus can affect your credit, then if your child is heading to college in the next few years, establishing a credit sooner or later can be of immense help to them.
  • It could help you teach your child about smart credit card use. If you teach your children about responsible credit card use, they’ll be less likely to make mistakes out of ignorance.
  • Your child can use their credit card during emergency situations.

Personal Finance – Planning Saving and Multiplication

What is Personal Finance?

Personal finance is the act of planning and managing personal financial activities. It involves income generation, spending, saving, investing, as well as protection.  Thus, Managing one’s personal finances can be summed up in a budget or financial plan.Personal Finance - Planning Saving and Multiplication

Areas of Personal Finance

Here, I will be breaking down personal finance. I will explore each of them in more detail to help you have a more direct understanding of the topic. The main areas of personal finance are income, spending, saving, investing, and protection.

Income

Firstly, Income means a source of cash inflow that an individual receives and then uses to support themselves and their family. Income is the starting point of the financial planning process.

Common sources of income include:

  • Salaries
  • Bonuses
  • Hourly wages
  • Pensions
  • Dividends

All these sources of income all generate cash that an individual can use to either spend, save, or invest.

Spending

Secondly, spending, This includes all kinds of expenses an individual. It includes buying goods and services or anything that is consumable.  Also, all spending can be categorized into two groups: cash (paid for with cash on hand) and credit (paid for by borrowing the money). Note that majority of most people’s income is allocated to spending.

Common sources of spending are:

  • Rent
  • Mortgage payments
  • Taxes
  • Food
  • Entertainment
  • Travel
  • Credit card payments

The above-listed expenses all reduce the amount of cash an individual has available for saving and investing. Where expenses are greater than income, the individual has a deficit. So managing expenses is just as important as generating income. Usually, people have more control over their discretionary expenses than their income. On the whole, good spending habits are critical for good personal finance management.

Saving

Saving means excess cash that is retained for future investing or spending. Where there is a surplus between what a person earns as income and what they spend, the difference can be directed towards savings or investments. Managing savings is a vital area of personal finance.

Common forms of savings include:

In addition, most people keep at least some savings in order to manage their cash flow.  Also, the short term difference between their income and expenses. However having too many savings,  can be said to be a bad thing, as it earns little to no return as compared to investments.

Investing

In the same vein, Investing relates to the purchase of assets which are expected to generate a rate of return. The individual aims at receiving back more money than they originally invested. Investing comes with risk.  Because not all assets actually end up becoming a productive positive rate of return. This is where the relationship between risk and return comes in.

Common forms of investing includes:

  • Real estate
  • Art
  • Bonds
  • Stocks
  • Mutual funds
  • Private companies
  • Commodities

Investing happens to be one of the most complicated areas of personal finance. It is one of the areas where people get the most professional advice. There are enormous differences in risk and reward between different investments. As a result, most people seek help with this area of their financial plan.

Protection

Furthermore, Personal protection. This is to a vast range of products which can be used to guard against an unforeseen and adverse event:

Common protection products include:

Protection happens to be another area of personal finance where people typically seek professional advice and which can become quite complicated.

Personal Finance Principles

Moreso, It is of utmost importance to state that personal circumstances differ considerably, depending on patterns of income, wealth, and consumption needs. Tax and finance also differ from country to country, and market conditions also vary geographically and over time. So what applies to one person may not apply to another. But according to the University of Chicago professor Harold Pollack and personal finance writer Helaine Olen argue that in the United States good personal finance advice boils down to a few simple points:

  • Firstly, You are to pay off your credit card balance every month in a full month.
  • Save up to 20% of your income
  • Try to maximize contributions to tax-advantaged funds like 401(K) retirement funds, individual retirement accounts, and 529 education savings plans.
  • Lastly, When investing savings:

Don’t try to trade individual securities.

Avoid high-fee and activity managed funds.

Scout for low-cost, diversified mutual funds that balance risk Vs. reward appropriately to your target retirement year.

As earlier stated, the limits stated bylaws may differ in each country.

What Is A Credit Score, What Credit Score Should You Have?

The question of what credit score should you have is a question that has been coming time and again, so let’s look at it. An individual’s credit score plays a vital role in determining his/her creditworthiness. A lender like a bank or a non-banking finance company evaluates the credit score of a potential borrower. This is to determine whether or not to lend to a borrower. What Is A Credit Score

Your credit score also impacts the amount of loan sanctioned and also the interest rate payable on the loan by the borrower. Additionally, when a borrower has a low credit score, the lender may reject the loan application.

What is a Credit Score?

A credit score is a three-digit number that represents the creditworthiness of an individual. A credit score typically ranges between 300 and 900, 900 being the highest score possible. Banks and various regulated lending institutions will normally check your credit score when you apply for a loan. A credit score is prepared by TransUnion CIBIL. It is one of the four credit bureaus functioning in India (other bureaus include Experian, CRIF High Mark, and Equifax).

What is a Good Credit Score?

Lenders like credit card issuers and mortgage providers may set their own standards on what a “good credit” score means. Also, they decide whether to grant you credit and at what interest rate. In practice, a good credit score is one that helps you get what you need or want, be it for accessing a new credit or for lower mortgage rates.

What Can a Good Credit Score Get You?

With a good credit score  you can borrow money as well as how much you’ll have to pay in interest to do so.

Here are the things you stand to gain with a good credit score:

  • A car loan or lease
  • A mortgage
  • Offers you a medium of paying for expenses in a crisis in a situation where you have an emergency and funds runs out.
  • An unsecured credit card with a decent interest rate, or even a balance transfer card.

A good credit score can also help you in other ways: In most states, people with higher credit scores pay less for car insurance. Additionally, some landlords use credit scores to screen tenants.

How To Improve Your Score

If you have an average credit score or worse, relax, you can still take steps to improve your score over time. Doing the following can help you improve your score:

  • Ensure you pay your bills on time every single month. Making late or missed payments are the single biggest factor which affects your credit score.
  • Try as much as you can to lower your credit utilization. Credit utilization is measured by how much of your credit limit you use.
  • Check your credit report from each of the three credit bureaus once a year for free through annualcreditreport.com. This will happen in April 2021. You can check your credit score for free weekly. When you review your credit report, it helps you spot any errors that may be having a negative impact on your score so you can take steps in correcting them.
  • Think of getting a secured credit card. This will help you, if you have poor or bad credit, you can start building a credit history with a secured card andit’s can be agood way to begin. You can choose a secured card that reports to all three credit bureaus. This gives you the best chance of having your good payment behavior and improve your credit standing.

Credit scores are not calculated with credit reports, andthey are not stored as part of your credit history. Rather, your credit score is calculated only when your credit score is requested. Your credit score can change over time, depending on your credit history including late payments, amount of available debt and more.
